Process / EAF Steelmaking Tenova Goodfellow Installs Water Detection System at ArcelorMittal Contrecoeur Ouest

Jul. 1, 2010
ArcelorMittal Contrecour Ouest Inc. has achieved EAF operating savings of over US$2.00 per ton liquid steel using the EFSOP system installed by Tenova Goodfellow Inc. at its plant just east of Montreal Canada. These savings are said to include significant reductions in electrical energy, natural gas, and charged carbon, as well as increased productivity.

Tenova Goodfellow says that the performance benefits were accomplished through a combination of various EFSOP optimization strategies that include real-time closed loop control of burners and oxygen injectors for various operating conditions and various carbon endpoint grades; charge carbon practice and bucket loading modification; electrical program modification during low electrical power limit conditions; and post combustion hold mode during high fume system temperature conditions that reduced operation stoppages.

Tenova Goodfellow has also completed the installation of its EFSOP Water Detection System, which detects and alerts operators in real time of abnormal water events in the furnace. The system uses the off-gas measurements from the EFSOP system and proprietary software to compare abnormal operating conditions to known normal operating conditions. The EFSOP Water Detection system has confirmed observed leaks such as water leaks in the smoke ring and roof delta, as well as excessive snow in the charge buckets.

Tenova Goodfellow Inc., headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, is the “centre of excellence” for process control technology development within the Tenova Group of companies. The company delivers integrated solutions that improve the energy efficiency of its customers. Goodfellow EFSOP technology is a leading off-gas-based process control system for EAFs. It measures and analyzes EAF off-gases (CO, CO2, H2, O2) continuously at the fourth-hole for real-time, closed-loop process control of EAF steelmaking, resulting in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs, and safety benefits.

Tenova designs and supplies advanced technologies, products, and services for the metal and mining industries. The company operates close to its customers through a network of 33 companies based on five continents.
