Sumitomo Metals’ ICI Subsidiary Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Production Start-up
May 17, 2012 - Sumitomo Metal Industries subsidiary International Crankshaft Inc., the company’s Kentucky-based U.S. manufacturing and sales base for forged crankshafts, recently held a ceremony celebrating its 20th anniversary of operation.
March Steel Shipments up 1.3% from February
May 17, 2012 - U.S. steel mills shipped 8,512,825 net tons for the month of March 2012, a 1.3% increase from the 8,407,343 net tons shipped in the previous month according to the latest release from AISI.
Service Center Shipments Show Small Bounce Back in April
May 16, 2012 - April service center shipments of aluminum and steel were up slightly in both the U.S. and Canada, an improvement from the year-over-year declines seen in March, according to the latest report from the Metals Service Center Institute.
ThyssenKrupp Examines Options for Steel Americas Plants in Brazil, U.S.
May 16, 2012 - The Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG informed the Supervisory Board of its decision to examine strategic options for the plants of Steel Americas in Brazil and the U.S., in parallel with further technical and commercial optimization, to which the Supervisory Board assented. The options may involve a partnership or a sale to a best owner whose strategy can better utilize the plants.
USITC to Uphold Antidumping Orders on Tin- and Chromium-Coated Steel Sheet from Japan
May 16, 2012 - The U.S. International Trade Commission has determined that revoking the existing antidumping duty order on tin- and chromium-coated steel sheet from Japan would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time.
Northwest Pipe Reports Q1 2012 Financial Results
May 15, 2012 - Northwest Pipe reported that net sales for the quarter ended March 31, 2012, increased 27.6% to $142.2 million compared to $111.5 million in the same quarter in 2011. Gross profit was $16.5 million (11.6% of net sales), an increase from $14.8 million (13.2% of net sales) a year ago.
RG Steel to Restart L-Blast Furnace at Sparrows Point
May 15, 2012 - RG Steel issued a release that on May 12 the company was to restart its L Blast Furnace at Sparrows Point. The L Blast Furnace had been shut down on May 9 as scheduled for a routine maintenance outage.
Canadian Agency to Investigate Dumping, Subsidizing of Carbon Steel Welded Pipe
May 15, 2012 - The Canada Border Services Agency is initiating investigations into the alleged injurious dumping of carbon steel welded pipe. The Agency is also initiating investigations into the alleged injurious subsidizing of some carbon steel welded pipe from the Republic of India, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
SSINA Reports Continued Surges in Electrical Steel Imports
May 14, 2012 - The Specialty Steel Industry of North America is expressing concern about surging imports of grain-oriented electrical steel, which is showing the potential for significant import increases for both value and quantity, based on year-to-date imports through March 2012.
U. S. Steel Names General Manager-Tubular Operations
May 14, 2012 - United States Steel Corp. announced the promotion of Kurt A. Barshick to the position of General Manager – Tubular Operations, with responsibility for day-to-day operations at four of U. S. Steel's tubular products manufacturing facilities.
AK Steel Announces Carbon Steel Price Increase
May 10, 2012 - AK Steel announces plans to increase current spot market base prices for all carbon flat-rolled steel products.
Gerdau CEO Named Steelmaker of the Year at AISTech 2012
May 9, 2012 - Gerdau CEO André B. Gerdau Johannpeter was named Steelmaker of the Year at AISTech 2012 — The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition, managed by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology. Winners for a number of other prestigious awards were also announced during the Conference’s annual President’s Award Breakfast.
Canadian Tribunal Initiates Inquiry on Steel Piling Pipe from China
May 8, 2012 - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal has initiated a preliminary injury inquiry into a complaint of injury resulting from dumping and subsidizing of steel piling pipe from P.R. China.
Gerdau to Replace Continuous Caster at St. Paul Facility
May 8, 2012 - Gerdau plans to invest $50 million to replace the continuous caster at its St. Paul, Minn., mill. The investment will increase Special Bar Quality (SBQ) capacity by 100,000 tonnes and increase the mill’s total capacity to 550,000 tonnes.
Tenova Core Converts Vacuum Tank Degassing System for Joy Global
May 7, 2012 - Tenova Core recently completed a major revamp of a vacuum tank degassing system at Joy Global’s steelmaking facility in Longview, Texas. The company was contracted for design and supply of a state-of-the-art mechanical pumping system for the vacuum degasser.
Nucor Facilities Receive Environmental Awards
May 7, 2012 - Vulcraft-Texas and Century Industrial Coatings have been honored with the 2012 Texas Environmental Excellence Award for reducing VOC emissions. Nucor Steel-Berkeley has been awarded the South Carolina Manufacturers Association's "Made in SC Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award."
Russel Metals Announces First Quarter Results
May 4, 2012 - Russel Metals Inc. announced first quarter 2012 earnings of $33 million, or $0.55 per share on revenues of $803 million. These results matched the earnings in the same quarter last year and are above the fourth quarter 2011 earnings of $0.47 per share.
Finished Steel Imports Up 11% in April
May 3, 2012 - Total steel import permit applications reached 3,074,000 net tons for the month of April, a 5% decrease from the 3,248,000 permit tons recorded in March according to the latest report from AISI. Import tonnage for finished steel was up 11% over the same period.
Russel Metals Completes Acquisition of Siemens Laserworks
May 2, 2012 - Russel Metals Inc. has completed its acquisition of Siemens Laserworks Inc., a value-added laser processing company with trailing twelve months revenues of $33 million.
Northwest Pipe Reports Full Year 2011 Results
May 2, 2012 - Northwest Pipe Co. announced its 2011 financial results including record revenues in 2011 and a return to profitability. Net sales for the year ended December 31, 2011 increased 32.3% to $511.7 million compared to $386.8 million in the prior year.
Reliance Completes Acquisition of Worthington Steel Vonore Assets
May 2, 2012 - Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., through its wholly owned subsidiary Precision Strip, Inc., has completed the acquisition of the assets of the Worthington Steel Vonore plant, a processing facility owned by Worthington Industries, Inc.
worldsteel Releases Short Range Outlook
May 1, 2012 - The World Steel Association (worldsteel) released its April 2012 Short Range Outlook (SRO) for 2012 and 2013, forecasting that global apparent steel use will increase by 3.6% to 1,422 million tonnes in 2012, following growth of 5.6% in 2011. In 2013, world steel demand is forecast to grow an additional 4.5% to around 1,486 million tonnes.
ArcelorMittal May Further Increase Production at ArcelorMittal Mines Canada
Apr. 30, 2012 - Results of a scoping study have allowed ArcelorMittal has identify the potential to increase annual production of iron-ore concentrate to 30 million tonnes per annum at its ArcelorMittal Mines Canada using the facility’s existing infrastructure system.
Canadian Tribunal Initiates Expiry Review for HR Carbon Plate from China
Apr. 30, 2012 - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal has initiated an expiry review of its orders made on January 9, 2008, concerning the dumping of hot-rolled carbon steel plate from China.
Worthington Announces Succession Plan for President & COO Steel
Apr. 30, 2012 - Worthington Industries, Inc. announced that Mark A. Russell will become the next President and Chief Operating Officer of the company, effective Aug. 1, 2012, replacing George P. Stoe. Geoff G. Gilmore will replace Russell becoming the next president of Worthington Steel also on Aug. 1.
Siemens Acquires FCE Furnace Company
Apr. 27, 2012 - Siemens Industry, Inc. has signed and closed a purchase agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of FCE, LLC, a furnace company headquartered in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., that will now operate within the Metals Technologies business unit of the Siemens Industry Sector.
Timken Posts Record First Quarter, Raises Full-Year Outlook
Apr. 27, 2012 - The Timken Co. reported record sales of $1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 13% over the same period a year ago. The company also generated record income of $155.7 million, or $1.58 per diluted share, compared with $112.7 million, or $1.13 per diluted share, a year ago.
Preliminary Steel Imports Up 7% in March
Apr. 26, 2012 - The U.S. imported a total of 2,899,000 net tons of steel in March, up 7% from February final data according to the latest report AISI. Finished steel imports were up 4% through the same period.
AK Steel Reports Financial Results for First Quarter of 2012
Apr. 26, 2012 - AK Steel reported a net loss of $11.8 million on net sales of $1,508.7 million for the first quarter of 2012.
AK Steel's Coshocton Works Recognized for Outstanding Safety Performance
Apr. 25, 2012 - The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, Division of Safety and Hygiene has recognized AK Steel's Coshocton Works for operating 2,952,729 hours without a lost-time injury between February 20, 2008 and August 5, 2011.
United States Steel Reports 2012 First Quarter Results
Apr. 25, 2012 - United States Steel Corp. reported a net loss of $219 million on net sales of $5.172 billion for the first quarter of 2012.
Timken Breaks Ground on Faircrest Expansion
Apr. 24, 2012 - The Timken Co. celebrated the start of work on a $225 million expansion of its Faircrest Steel Plant that will feature the addition of a new ladle refiner and large-bloom continuous caster.
SMS Concast to Supply Vertical Bloom Caster for Timken Faircrest
Apr. 23, 2012 - SMS Concast AG has been awarded jointly with SMS Concast America Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a major contract from The Timken Co. to supply a three(four)-strand UHQ vertical bloom casting facility for Timken’s Faircrest steel plant in Canton, Ohio.
World Steel Association Reports March 2012 Crude Steel Production
Apr. 23, 2012 - Crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 132 million tonnes (Mt) in March 2012, an increase of 1.8% compared to March 2011. Production for the first quarter of 2012 was 377 Mt, 1.1% higher than the first quarter of 2011.
Metals USA Reports First Quarter 2012 Results
Apr. 20, 2012 - Metals USA Holdings Corp. reported net sales for the first quarter of 2012, ended March 31, of $525.3 million, up 22% from net sales of $432.3 million recorded for the first quarter of 2011. Net income was $16.3 million, compared to first quarter 2011 net income of $12.4 million.
Praxair to Supply Industrial Gases for New Deacero Plant at Coahuila
Apr. 20, 2012 - Praxair Mexico has signed a new contract with Mexican steel company Deacero to supply oxygen, argon, and nitrogen to a new plant being built in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, in north Mexico.
Steel Dynamics Reports First Quarter 2012 Results
Apr. 20, 2012 - Steel Dynamics, Inc. announced first quarter net income of $46 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, on net sales of $2.0 billion. By comparison, prior-year first quarter net income was $106 million, or $0.46 per diluted share, and sequential fourth quarter 2011 net income was $30 million, or $0.14 per diluted share.
Nucor Reports First Quarter 2012 Results
Apr. 20, 2012 - Nucor Corp. announced consolidated net earnings of $145.1 million, or $0.46 per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2012, compared to net earnings of $159.8 million, or $0.50 per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2011 and net earnings of $137.1 million, or $0.43 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Ryerson to Open New Illinois Service Center
Apr. 19, 2012 - Ryerson Inc. announced that it will open a new bar processing depot and full line service center in DeKalb, Ill. The 150,000-square-foot facility is expected to begin operations in June 2012.
SSINA Releases Market Data for January 2012
Apr. 19, 2012 - Imports of total stainless steel in YTD January 2012 were 70,107 tons, a 4.7% increase compared to a year ago, according to recently released statistical data from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
