Service Centers MacSteel Service Centers USA Opens New Tucson Facility

May 18, 2007
MacSteel Service Centers USA has opened a new $10-million metals processing and distribution service center in the Century Park research Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The company held a western-themed open house celebration on Thursday, May 17, 2007 for employees, customers, suppliers and local government officials to mark the start up of the new facility. Guests received tours of the 73,400-square-foot greenfield facility from company employees and plant officials.

Equipped with technologically advanced metals processing equipment, the new facility will process and distribute carbon and non-ferrous metals for customers throughout the Southwest U.S and Mexico.

Early operations at the new facility include a 72-iinch Braner slitting line with turret recoiler and a 60-inch blanking line. The slitter will have a 60,000-lb. master coil capacity and will range in thickness from 0.011 to 0.187 inch. The 60-inch blanking line has a 40,000-lb master coil capacity and will process material ranging in thickness from 0.020 to 0.138 inch.

The slitter and blanking line are both capable of processing cold rolled, galvanized, prepainted, hot rolled pickled and oiled, galvanneal, electrogalvanized, stainless steel and aluminum.

In addition to the processing equipment, the new plant also features rail line services into the building, drive-through truck lanes and 35-ton and 20-ton Zenar cranes, allowing the Tucson facility to receive coils weighing up to 70,000 lb.

“Opening the hub in Tucson gives us the opportunity to provide even better service and support to our customers,” said Michael Hoffman, MacSteel Service Centers USA's President and CEO. “It also helps strengthen our network presence in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico markets, where we currently operate facilities.”
