Total stainless imports reached 234,989tons through August 2009, a 56.8% decrease compared to YTD August 2008 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 308,239tons through the same period, a 55.4% decrease compared to YTD August 2008.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD August 2009 compared to the same 2008 eight-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD August 2009 imports were 132,250 tons, a 60.9% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 594,503 tons through the same period, a 36.8% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 22.2%, a 13.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel plate YTD August 2009 imports were 24,016 tons, a 65.0% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 111,542 tons through the same period, a 35.9% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 21.5%, a 17.9 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel bar YTD August 2009 imports were 51,016 tons, a 40.7% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 99,749 tons through the same period, a 38.9% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 51.1%, a 1.6 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel rod YTD August 2009 imports were 8,107 tons, a 61.9% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 20,752 tons through the same period, a 52.1% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 39.1%, a 9.9 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel wire YTD August 2009 imports were 19,599 tons, a 34.9% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 26,171 tons through the same period, a 46.1% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 74.9%, a 12.9 percentage point increase from 2008.
Through YTD August 2009, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 234,989tons, a 56.8% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 852,718tons through the same period, a 37.8% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 27.6%, a 12.1 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Alloy tool steel YTD August 2009 imports were 24,192 tons, a 64.8% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Electrical steel YTD August 2009 imports were 49,058 tons, a 37.7% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 146,780 tons through the same period, a 37.5% decrease from YTD August 2008, while eight-month import penetration was 33.4%, a 0.2 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Through YTD August 2009, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 308,239tons, a 55.4% decrease compared to YTD August 2008. U.S. consumption was 1,014,880tons through the same period, a 38.9% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 30.4%, an 11.2 percentage point decrease from 2008.
