Total stainless imports reached 348,431 tons, a 49.9% decrease compared to YTD November 2008 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 442,265 tons through the same period, a 50.6% decrease compared to YTD November 2008.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD October 2009 compared to the same 2008 ten-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD November imports were 195,685 tons, a 53.8% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 881,517 tons over the same period, a 26.0% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 22.2%, a 13.4 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel plate YTD November imports were 44,088 tons, a 50.5% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 166,428 tons over the same period, a 25.1% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 26.5%, a 13.6 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel bar YTD November imports were 67,398 tons, a 40.5% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 134,804 tons over the same period, a 37.3% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 50.0%, a 2.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel rod YTD November imports were 12,803 tons, a 55.5% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 33,091 tons over the same period, a 43.2% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 38.7%, a 10.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel wire YTD November imports were 28,457 tons, a 29.6% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 40,403 tons over the same period, a 35.0% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 70.4%, a 5.4 percentage point increase from 2008.
Through YTD November 2009, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) reached 348,431 tons, a 49.9% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was
1,256,243 tons through the same period, a 28.2% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was 27.7%, a 12.1 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Alloy tool steel YTD November imports were 33,206 tons, a 62.9% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Electrical steel YTD November imports were 60,629 tons, a 45.3% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 185,965 tons over the same period, a 41.5% decrease from YTD November 2008, while eleven-month import penetration was 32.6%, a 2.3 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Through YTD November 2009, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 442,265 tons, a 50.6% decrease compared to YTD November 2008. U.S. consumption was 1,462,044 tons through the same period, a 31.6% decrease, while eleven-month import penetration was
30.2%, an 11.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
