AISI Applauds WTO Complaint against China for Illegal Export Restrictions
Mar. 14, 2012 In a published release, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) said it applauds the decision of the United States, along with the European Union and Japan, to hold China accountable for its illegal restrictions on exports of tungsten and molybdenum, as well as rare earth elements.
“Tungsten and molybdenum are important raw materials in making steel and other products, and China's export restrictions have distorted the world market for those materials, to the detriment of American manufacturers and American workers,” said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson.
“The rare earth elements are critical to the industrial base of the United States, and AISI is pleased to see the U.S. government working with other countries to tackle China's attempts to use export restrictions on raw materials to force foreign companies to shift industrial production and technology to China,” added Gibson.
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 124 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
