Rio Tinto to Invest for Next Stage of Simandou Iron Ore Project
Aug. 3, 2010 - Rio Tinto has approved US$170 million of further funding for the next stage of developing its Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, including mine, rail, and port infrastructure work. The investment takes effect immediately.
Vallourec Plans to Expand Plant in China
Aug. 2, 2010 - Vallourec plans to expand its V & M Changzhou plant in China, enabling the production of 60,000 tonnes of seamless pipes per year to serve the local demand for power plants. Operations are expected to begin by mid-2012.
Air Liquide Expands Partnership with Severstal
Aug. 2, 2010 - The Air Liquide Group has signed a new contract with Severstal for outsourcing of industrial gases in Cherepovets. Production capacity of the new Air Separation Unit, which is scheduled to start-up at the end of 2012, will reach 2000 tonnes per day of gaseous oxygen.

JSW Steel Dedicates Hot Strip Mill at Vijayanagar
Aug. 2, 2010 - The new state-of-the-art hot strip mill at JSW Steel Vijayanagar Works—said to be the widest and largest in India—was dedicated by Shri Virbhadra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Steel, Govt. of India, on July 31. The new mill has 2250-mm width and a 1.5- to 25-mm thickness range.
Posco Opens New Processing Center in China
Jul. 30, 2010 - Posco has completed the construction of Posco-CLPC, the new processing center at the EU Economic Development Zone in Shenyang, China, and started operations the same day. The new facility will process 170,000 tonnes of steel annually.
Nippon Steel, BlueScope Steel Sign Joint Technical Collaboration Agreement
Jul. 29, 2010 - Nippon Steel Corp. and BlueScope Steel Ltd. have signed a long-term joint technical collaboration agreement to develop next-generation coated steel products for the global building and construction market.
NLMK Launches New Environmental Project at Sintering Operations
Jul. 29, 2010 - Novolipetsk Steel is revamping the central dust collecting system for sintering machines No.3 and No.4, which it claims will cut total atmospheric dust emissions at the Lipetsk site by 28%.
Siemens to Provide Double-Strand Wire Rod Mill for Xuanhua

Jul. 28, 2010 - JFE Steel Corp. and JSW Steel Ltd. have signed agreements for JFE Steel to take an equity position in JSW Steel and to provide the Indian steelmaker with technical assistance. JFE Steel, through this partnership, now expects to participate on a full scale in India.
JFE Steel to Acquire Stake in Pancheng Yihong Pipe
Jul. 27, 2010 - JFE Steel Corp. has agreed with Pancheng Yihong Pipe Co. to acquire a 24% stake in the Sichuan, China-based processor of high-quality seamless pipes for oilfields, by purchasing newly issued shares. JFE Steel’s 24% share will turn the company into a JFE Steel affiliate under equity-method accounting.
Siemens to Modernize Long-Product Rolling Mill for Posco
Jul. 27, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Posco Specialty Steel Co. Ltd. to modernize the long-product rolling mill in its Changwon Works. The modernization is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.
Kobe Steel Completes 10,000-Tonne Forging Press
Jul. 27, 2010 - Kobe Steel, Ltd. has completed the construction of a 10,000-tonne forging press line at its Takasago Works in Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan. A manipulator, heating furnace, heat treatment furnace, crane, and other equipment were also installed.
SAIL Begins Revival of Jagdishpur Unit
Jul. 27, 2010 - Atul Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India, and Steel Authority of India Ltd. Chairman C.S. Verma laid the foundation stone of a TMT (thermo mechanically treated) Bar Mill of 150,000-tonne-per-annum capacity, as part of SAIL's plan to revive and develop the steel plant of former Malvika Steel Ltd.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Supplies Steel for Hydroelectric Power
Jul. 26, 2010 - ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG is supplying 17,000 tonnes of high-strength, quenched and tempered plate to the Ingula pumped storage scheme project of the South African power utility Eskom. The steel will be used to manufacture piping up to 5.1 meters in diameter for the scheme.

Jul. 23, 2010 - Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corp. has developed what it calls the world’s first low-interstitial ferritic steel grades with tin, named the “FW series.” The company has begun marketing/distributing the first FW series steel, NSSC® FW1.

Interim Supply Agreement Concluded Between ArcelorMittal South Africa and Kumba
Jul. 23, 2010 - ArcelorMittal and Sishen Iron Ore Co. Ltd. have agreed to a fixed price of $50 per tonne of iron ore for lump material, which is for delivery to the Saldanha plant, and $70 per tonne of iron ore for both lump and fine material delivered to ArcelorMittal’s inland plants.
Saarschmiede Inaugurates Open-Die Forging Press from SMS Meer
Jul. 22, 2010 - Saarschmiede GmbH, of Völklingen, Germany, recently commissioned the open-die forging press supplied by SMS Meer. It has a press force of 12,000 tonnes and can forge at up to 1280°C.
Siemens Modernizes EAFs in Finland, Saudi Arabia
Jul. 22, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies received orders to modernize electric arc furnaces for both the Saudi Iron and Steel Co. (Hadeed) and Outokumpu Oy. Both plants will be equipped with a new hydraulic system to improve the efficiency, availability, and productivity of the furnaces.
New Process Boosts Productivity at ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni
Jul. 22, 2010 - ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni is one of only a few stainless steel mills using “S-6-high” rolling technology integrated on strip processing lines. World Crude Steel Production Dips 4.4% in June
Jul. 22, 2010 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the world steel association stood at an estimated 118.76 million tonnes in June 2010 — a 4.4% decrease from the previous month (May 2010) and an 18.0% increase vs. June 2009.
Tenova I2S Commissions Cluster Mill at Shanghai Qichang Stainless Steel
Jul. 21, 2010 - Tenova I2S has commissioned its new ZR23CN-26” 20 Hi Cluster Mill at Shanghai Qichang Stainless Steel in Shanghai, China. The mill produces stainless steels from 3.0 to 0.05 mm thickness with a strip width range of 300 to 660 mm at speeds of 600 meters per minute.
Corus Recruits New Workers in Specialty Steels Business
Jul. 21, 2010 - Corus plans to recruit 154 new workers for its South Yorkshire manufacturing operations and to resume apprentice and graduate recruitment. Corus Specialty Steels is looking for 14 apprentices and seven graduates—the first time the business has recruited trainees since the economic downturn.

Baosteel Completes First Lot Supply of Heavy Plate for Queensland Pipeline
Jul. 20, 2010 - The first lot of 11,500 tonnes of heavy plate for UOE pipe for the Queensland Curtis liquefied natural gas pipeline project recently entered the final pipe-making process at Baosteel. The company will supply 200,000 tonnes of high-grade X70 steel line pipe.
China Steel, SMS Mevac Extend Partnership with Sixth RH Plant
Jul. 20, 2010 - China Steel orders a sixth RH plant from SMS Mevac. The order follows SMS Mevac’s recent installation of a 250-tonne RH Plant scheduled to be started up at China Steel’s Converter Plant No. 2 in the second quarter of 2012.
SAIL Orders Long-Product Rolling Mill from Siemens VAI
Jul. 20, 2010 - The Steel Authority of India has awarded an order to a consortium led by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for the construction of a new rolling mill for long products in Durgapur, West Bengal. It is scheduled to produce 1 million tonnes per annum, starting from mid-2012, of structural steels of various sizes and cross-sections.
Gerdau Expands Investments in Ouro Branco
Jul. 20, 2010 - Gerdau is making a new investment at its steelworks in the city of Ouro Branco (state of Minas Gerais): its first hot-rolled coil mill to be installed in Brazil. A new flat steel rolling mill also will be installed for the production of heavy plates. Joint capacity of these two rolling mills will initially be 1.9 million tonnes/year.
Mechel Commissions Steel Processing Equipment at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant
Jul. 20, 2010 - Mechel OAO has commissioned the secondary steel processing equipment within the first stage of the arc-furnace meltshop #6 upgrade at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Commissioned equipment includes the ladle furnace No. 2 for steel processing and a vacuum tank degasser for molten metal degassing.
Tata Steel Sells Stake in Southern Steel Berhad
Jul. 19, 2010 - Tata Steel’s subsidiary NatSteel Holdings Pte. Ltd. has sold its 27.03% stake in Southern Steel Berhad, Malaysia, at a total consideration of around USD 72 million.
Vale Announces New Strategic Partner at Pecém Steel
Jul. 19, 2010 - Posco joins Vale and Dongkuk in the Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém – CSP project, which is being built at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The new CSP shareholders participation will be approximately Vale 50%, Dongkuk 30%, and Posco 20%.
Kumba to Halt Iron Ore Supply to ArcelorMittal
Jul. 19, 2010 - ArcelorMittal and Sishen Iron Ore Co. Ltd. (SIOC), a subsidiary of Kumba Iron Ore Ltd., have failed to conclude an interim price arrangement for the supply of iron ore. SIOC plans to cease supplying iron ore to ArcelorMittal's steel plants within two weeks as a result.

Second Posco-VHPC Factory Starts Processing
Jul. 16, 2010 - Posco has opened the second factory of Posco-VHPC; the first opened in March 2008 to provide high-quality steel-processing service in the Vietnamese market. With the new processing center in operation, Posco-VHPC will have 150,000 tonnes of production capability.
Air Products to Supply Nitrogen and Hydrogen to Posco in India
Jul. 16, 2010 - INOX Air Products has signed a long-term contract with Posco Maharashtra Steel Private Ltd. (PMSPL) to supply on-site nitrogen and hydrogen gases to its new facility located in Maharashtra, Western India. The plants are expected to come on-stream in late 2011.

Rio Tinto Approves Funding for Expansion of Pilbara Operations
Jul. 15, 2010 - Rio Tinto has announced US$200 million funding to prepare for the expansion of its iron ore operations in Western Australia. The funding will allow dredging contracts to be issued as part of early works on the expansion of the Cape Lambert port, supporting the Pilbara operations' overall capacity increase to 330 million tonnes a year.
Mechel Reports First-Quarter Financial Results
Jul. 15, 2010 - Mechel reported that net revenue in the first quarter of 2010, which ended March 31, increased by 61.1% to $1.9 billion, compared to $1.2 billion in the first quarter of 2009. Operating income rose by 971.2% to $147.6 million, or 7.8% of net revenue.

ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih Orders Ladle Met Equipment, Billet Caster from Siemens
Jul. 13, 2010 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies will supply the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Kryviy Rih, Ukraine, with secondary metallurgical equipment, a six-strand billet caster, and the requisite auxiliary systems. The new plants are designed for an annual production of 1.4 million tonnes of billets and are scheduled to come into operation in September 2011.
Ruukki to Supply Structures for Biomass Power Plant in Central Eastern Europe
Jul. 12, 2010 - Ruukki has agreed to deliver the steel structures for a new unit to be built at the Polaniec power plant in southeast Poland. The new unit is expected to be commissioned toward the end of 2012.
Posco Acquires 70% Share in Australian Coal Mine
Jul. 12, 2010 - Posco’s Australian unit, Posco Australia Pty. Ltd. (POSA), recently acquired a 70% share in the Sutton Forest Mine, which was owned by Anglo American. Posco says the acquisition raises its coal self-sufficiency ratio to 36% from the current 30%.

Companies Respond to European Commission Decision on Pre-Stressed Steel Case
Jul. 1, 2010 - The European Commission has completed its investigations into dozens of companies manufacturing prestressing steel. A total of 17 European steel producers will be fined for price collusion between competitors during the years 1984-2002. The Commission ordered fines totaling €518 million for the companies involved.

Fitch Reports Global Steel in Recovery
Jun. 29, 2010 - Fitch Ratings expects to see demand for steel to continue on a slow and steady recovery pace over the next 12-18 months but not to reach peak levels for developed nations until 2012, according to its most recent “Worldwide Steel Outlook.”
