World ArcelorMittal Makes Donation for Victims in Haiti

Jan. 27, 2010
ArcelorMittal, through the ArcelorMittal Foundation, has donated 1 million USD to help the relief efforts in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the earthquake that struck the island earlier this month.

The company previously announced two days after the disaster to support an emergency intervention from the organization Médecins sans frontières (MSF) in Port-au-Prince.

Increasing its aid to a total of 1 million USD, ArcelorMittal’s donation will be given in both cash and kind, offering assistance in new housing projects to rebuild Haiti. The company is also encouraging its employees to support other local initiatives in the country.

"The painful images and news of the earthquake in Haiti have shocked us all,” said Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal. “The scale of the devastation is beyond comprehension. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to all the people affected by this tragedy. I hope with our help, and the help of others, that we will be able to bring support in rebuilding the country and aid those who have suffered."

ArcelorMittal, with operations in more than 60 countries, is a leader in all major global steel markets, including automotive, construction, household appliances, and packaging, with sizeable captive supplies of raw materials. With an industrial presence in more than 20 countries spanning four continents, the company covers all of the key steel markets, from emerging to mature. In 2008, ArcelorMittal had revenues of $124.9 billion and crude steel production of 103.3 million tonnes, representing about 10% of world steel output.
