Ruukki to Adjust Construction, Engineering Operations in Finland

Feb. 1, 2010
Ruukki plans to further improve the efficiency of construction operations at Vimpeli, Alajärvi, and Peräseinäjoki in Finland and to transfer the manufacture of components for the engineering industry from Peräseinäjoki to other units. The employer-employee negotiations initiated in December last year have now ended at these sites.

The negotiations resulted in the loss of 52 jobs, with 22 of the persons affected being subject to various pension arrangements. New jobs were found elsewhere in Ruukki for 19 persons. When the negotiations were initiated, the company estimated that a workforce reduction of up to 100 people was required.

Ruukki says it will assist in the re-employment of persons facing redundancy through, for example, local training programs carried out with the Finnish employment services. Data about persons facing redundancy will be collected centrally to ensure any vacancies are primarily offered to them.

Due to weak market conditions, Ruukki says that it may need to implement temporary layoffs not only at the above production sites, but also in the construction business development organization and in building construction sales. The extent and duration of layoffs will vary according to site.

Ruukki has a total of around 6200 employees in Finland.

Rautaruukki, which uses the marketing name Ruukki, supplies metal-based components, systems, and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries. The company has a wide selection of metal products and services. It has operations in 27 countries and employs 12,200 people. Net sales in 2008 totaled EUR 3.9 billion.
